Friday Knights

Season Results

Regular Season - The Knights stormed to a second place finish for the 2000 season. There was only one loss and the Knights have vowed revenge in the playoffs. The plan is to bring in the super subs with the blazing speed, wicked shots and winning attitude. Combine that with short shifts , relentless backchecking, and the superb goaltending of Joey Krizek and the Knights are the odds on favorite for the championship. The Knights outscored their opposition by an astounding 55 -14 during the regular season. Mike MacAskill had more than four times the number of penalties as the next closest teammate.

Game Summary

1

4/14 Wolverines 4-0 1-0 The Knights opened the season with a strong performance all around. Joey was steller in the net. Boice, Kinlin, MacAskill, Diaspro scored the goals. Mark Weston introduced himself to the Knights by spending two minutes in the box for tripping. He was counseled after the game to clean up his act and never spent another minute in the box.

2

4/17 Hockeytown 7-0 2-0 In a totally dominating performance, the Knights trounced Hockeytown. The only Knights without a point tonight were Krizek (C'mon Joey), Boice (resting on his laurels from the opener), Granowicz (you've got to shoot to score Pat), and Dean Ortel (don't use the excuse you were playing defense - we won 7-0).

3

4/21 Wolves 3-4 2-1 This was the worst moment of the season. Without Coach Bowman, the team was in disarray. People were late, people (Dean) forgot their equipment, long shifts were the rule, and as a general statement the team stunk. McDonald got kicked out for breaking his stick over the boards and nearly taking Dharte's nose off. After the game McDonald ripped the team a new ass. It must have worked because it was the only loss of the season. Weston with two goals and Partain with one were the only bright spots. This game marked the debut of Rick Hein for the Friday Knights. In hindsight, Coach McDonald feels it was a huge mistake to invite Hein to play much less put him on defense against a quality team. This game was marred by 24 minutes of Knight penalties. The Enforcer, Mike MacAskill had two cross checking penalties, the last of which cost us the game and almost his position on the Production Line.

4

4/24 Nitro 10-0  3-1 The Knights came roaring back after the big ass chewing. Coach Bowman's steadying influence was felt from the opening faceoff. Kinlin had a hat trick. The only non scorers were Krizek, PJ, and Coach Bowman. Joey made up for his lack of offensive output by recording his league leading third shutout stopping all 3 shots he faced.
5 4/28 Marauders 7-2 4-1 The offense was working for the 2nd straight game. Newcomer Marty Pavelich scored 4 goals, three of them shorthanded. In order to keep Marty from whining, Rochon just kept giving him the puck. Several of the superstars including Krizek were in Toronto playing for the International team. Therefore, Joey can't be held accountable for the lack of a shutout.
6 5/1 Kemp 2-2 4-1-1 This was a lackluster performance all around. Rochon and Granowicz (see what happens when you shoot) were the only scorers. Joey let in two really weak goals for the first time this year. Coach McDonald was thoroughly pissed off after the game and delivered another ass chewin'. He felt that the team had lapsed into the old long shift habit and tied a much weaker team. In the playoffs he was proven right as the Knights knocked Kemp out with a thoroughly dominating performance.
7 5-5 Icemen 3-3 4-1-2 The Icemen are a young group that tested the Knights who were still playing shorthanded. The team missed the leadership of McDonald who was in Germany drinking beer and eating Wiener Schnitzel. Joey was unbelievable in the third period as the Icemen dominated play. The Knights held a slim lead, but caved with less than 3 minutes to go. Granowicz, Krause, and Mike MacAskill were the goal scorers. Coach Thomas set up the first two goals with brilliant passes while two Icemen clung to his body. Mike MacAskill hurt the team real bad by taking himself off the ice with 3 penalties. One unsportsmanlike conduct (big surprise), one slash (bigger surprise), and one trip (oops). It was a very un-Production Line Member performance. Mike Myers got in a fight and got his ass beat real bad.
8 5-8 Pylons 5-1 5-1-2 The teams big guns, Pavelich and Benninger showed why they make the big bucks by putting the puck in the net. Krause, Weston, and Granowicz also chipped in goals. Joey turned in yet another strong performance and Tom Partain was the lone Knight to lose his cool and take a slashing penalty.
9 5-12 Grim Reaper 7-0 6-1-2 McDonald's scoring touch finally returned as he buried two goals. In an amazing coincidence, Mike MacAskill's assist touch returned because he threw a couple of passes to Pete. Thomas, Granowicz, Dharte (2) and Benninger also put the biscut in the basket. Everyone who showed up was on the scoreboard except Krizek who was actually heard snoring late in the 2nd period.
10 5-15 Wolverines 8-2 7-1-2 The Wolverines are praying that they don't meet the Knights in the playoffs. The Knights clobbered them out for the second time this season. This game marked the debut of Kevin Walsh in goal. This was his penalty for being one of the direct causes of the Knights only loss of the season. The Wolverines scored on their first two shots, one from downtown Birmingham and another from even further out. After that, the Knights got down to business. Krizek was moved to forward and after a shakey start (see his player profile), he performed well and scored the second to last goal of the game. This turned out to be a very rough game because the Wolverines thought they actually had a chance to win. PJ got his ass beat real bad (see both the MacAskill profiles). Both MacAskill's got unsportsmanlike conduct penalties (a habit for Mike). Marty did a great job keeping his cool after taking vicous cross check. He only hit the guy 3 times in the face in under a second. It was so quick, the ref missed it. Marty paid them back with 2 goals and one assist. After the game, there were nearly a couple of fights, but with the playoffs rolling around, cooler heads prevailed. Marty told one guy to take off his mask. After the guy did it, Marty pussed out and ran to the locker room. Maybe he thought we would see him kiss the guy.

Playoffs - Total Domination is the only way to describe the playoff performance of the Knights. They outscored the opposition 13 - 3 with JOEY Krizek standing tall the entire way. The first two games saw teams falling to the swarming offense of the Knights. The games were certainly not as close as the scores would indicate. Joey was actually seen sleeping during the second game. Diaspro drove in for all of the games from Cincinnati. The dedication to victory this year knows no bounds. Despite a strong effort by Mike MacAskill, Marty Pavelich managed to win the title for the most penalized player in the league in the last minute of the last game. Better luck next year Mike. The final two games were against the much younger Icemen. The first one was very close and very rough and the Knights taught the Icemen a lesson. The final game was anti-climatic as the Icemen were worn down from their last two games. The Knights stormed to an early lead and were never seriously challenged.

Game Summary

1

  Grim Reaper   4-1

1-0

The 2000 playoff season started with a bang. This game was a mismatch from the start. The Knights dominated this game from the start. As in the regular season, Joey had an easy (K)night. Benninger was unstoppable and had another Hat Trick. Rochon had the other goal on a tip in after 4 weeks off. Mike MacAskill again spent time at home in the penalty box. This time, Mike was so desparate for a goal that he decked the goalie with less than 10 seconds left in the game. His brother in law Pete had to help him out. After Pete hit the guy who hit Mike, Suzuki (Miss) looked like she wanted to beat his ass so he skated away laughing. There were 4 roughing penalties in this game.

2

Kemp

4-1

2-0

Kemp actually tied the Knights during the regular season. The playoffs were a different story. One member of Kemp was overheard saying with pride "we tied these guys in the regular season!" Little did he know that the Knights were on cruise control at that point and many regulars were resting in the bar. Kinlin scored two pretty goals, and the Production Line was dominant. This was a very clean game except that Mike MacAskill (BIG SURPRISE) had another cross checking penalty. Pat Granowicz lost his chance for the Lady Byng by taking a foolish roughing penalty (his only penalty of the year).

  Icemen

1 - 0

3 - 0

The Knights earned a berth in the Championship Game with a bitterly fought victory over the Icemen and their Referee brothers. This was by far the roughest game of the year, but the older Knights more than held their own. Scottie was glad to be BEHIND the bench for this one in his cheap 3-piece suit, calling out line-changes (and other verbal encouragements)! Marty opened the penalty box door with a vicious elbow to the goalie's chops. The goalie was lifted off the ice, off the goalpost and then back down to the ice. It was worth 5 minutes in the box. The Knights killed penalties all night. As expected, Mike MacAskill visited his home once again and fortunately did not cost the team a goal. Following in big-brother's footsteps - PJ tallied three penalties before being EJECTED from the game with his fourth, a Game Misconduct penalty. For some reason, the referee did not like it when PJ gave him the finger. The penalty killing and defense was stellar, but once again JOEY was the number one star. His season goals against average has dropped under 1.0 and he has not given up a single goal so far in the playoffs. The younger icemen simply could not keep the Knights off the scoreboard despite the Brothers Referees best attempts. The Knights had their first two goals called off, before Dharte absorbed an elbow to the face, centered the puck and Marty banged it home. Amazingly, the Refs did not call him for being in the crease. Late in the game, Marty beat up two Icemen (they were brothers) and once again visited the MacAskill home. While he was there, he again politely requested that they remove their f--king birdcages. We've all heard that before. One of the Icemen had his mommy come over to see if he was OK. In the end, the Knights were simply too strong to be beaten. Both teams are hoping for a re-match on the 16th in the Championship Game. There's no question who'll come out on top - but it's guaranteed to be a nail-biting, knock-down-drag-out, HARD-HITTING game! Ya gotta LOVE this game!

Icemen

4 - 0

The Knights were expecting a war. Pavelich was busy in the locker room prior to the game taping his knuckles just in case. No sense getting bloody knuckles if you have to crunch someones face.

The Knights stormed out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Pavelich and they were never seriously threatened during the entre game. The first goal was setup by Rochon with a beautiful cross ice pass to the streaking Pavelich. Marty made no mistake and slide the puck through the legs of the helpless goalie. On the next shift Marty pounced on a fluke bounce and caught the goalie by surprise and buried the puck in the back of the net. Less than one minute later, Joey was caught napping and gave up a goal on a rebound off the back wall. After that brief lapse, the Knights turned up the heat and dominated the rest of the way. Glen Boice scored a goal from the right point on a blistering one timer that the goalie never saw and Mike MacAskill took a beautiful pass from Partain and slide the puck under the goalie for the final tally. Krause, Dharte, Granowicz, and of course MacAskill all managed to take stupid penalties. Mike thought he had the penalty title safely in hand until there was less than one minute left in the game. At that point, Marty delayed the victory celebration for a good 10 minutes whining to the officials who up to that point had done a stellar job. A 2 minute unsportsmanlike conduct, and 10 minute misconduct helped Marty to nip Mike by a mere 2 minutes. For good measure, the referee threw in a double game misconduct due to Marty's constant references to the ref's family heritage. After Marty was safely escorted to the locker room, the Knights finished the Icemen off and the celebration began. Click to see the Knights' Victory Celebration.

In a very unique side story, Brian Atkinson, a Knight on injured reserve managed to sneak behind the bench and do enough trash talking to the Icemen that the referee kicked him out of a game he wasn't even in. Nice job Brian!
